This is a really good discussion, especially @brianboland’s thoughts on how measurement/comp models need to change for Facebook to address these issues. https://t.co/oEVkPAnvJq

I just narrowly avoided being run over by a sophomore on a bicycle, no helmet, AirPods in, reading his phone. Nature is healing.

1) Users of communication products have an absolute right to block whomever they want for whatever reason. 2) Providing users with blocking tools is good. 3) Providing users the ability to report really harmful (not just irritating) behavior is good and not a privacy violation. https://t.co/xB43Mk6GMv

CVE-2021-40444 has a real “found during a 2005 pen test at Microsoft while living in the Redmond Residence Inn” feel and it makes me miss @dakami because we would have laughed about it while drinking a beer and playing Halo 2 with the team.

Agreed. I think this is a smart ruling. The judge understood the security benefits of the app store monopoly while also stopping that monopoly from being used to bilk consumers and independent developers. Apple should be fine with the profit margin on $799 phones. https://t.co/Kw6G6LPWUR

This ProPublica article on WhatsApp is terrible. It is inconsistent with much of what ProPublica has written in the past, it incorrectly conflates responsible reporting mechanisms with proactive moderation, and creates the wrong incentive structure for E2EE products. https://t.co/Ylsc6MhvcZ

Today's WSJ reporting was especially difficult for me to read because it touches on a topic that probably "kept me awake" more than anything else when I was at FB. And that is, how can social networks operate responsibly in the global south? https://t.co/Ta844nFlRE 🧵...

"It would be a mistake to idealize these terrible events. All that many could feel was unearned suffering. All that many could hear was God's silence. ... We learned that bravery is more common than we imagined, emerging in sudden splendor in the face of death." -GW Bush #epf2001

keep this in mind when you see an article claiming encryption is hampering the January 6 investigation and when DOJ uses January 6 to demonize encryption, as though this didn't happen in broad daylight on non-E2EE platforms and they haven't prosecuted 100s & 100s of people https://t.co/wKvsO07eFU

🧵The most troubling thing about the ProPublica article is that it plays into a narrative of "E2EE is entirely shrouded in mystery"—impenetrable insofar as preventing online harms. For some, the logical conclusion of such reasoning then leads to: well, ban encrypted messaging.
