The way Djokovic got special treatment in court, the way he has shaken the country - while the experiences of refugees did not- shows that Aus gov and right wing media have succeeded in dehumanising refugees. Only through dehuminasation are these distinctions possible.

While Djokovic has a safe, comfortable life to return to, refugees who flee their homes only to be deported- are doubly persecuted. They cannot return safely. This is what it means to be a refugee.

When you let a part of the govt act like a dictator, it opens the way for it to spread across the body politic. Aus’s broken politics will not be fixed until there’s an acknowledgement that its refugee policy has poisoned the entire political culture

I don't care if they are going to deport Djokovic or not. What is much more important is that people understand how this system works and how refugees have been treated by this system, in which the immigration minister can overrule even the courts https://t.co/JCuuzJND5u

People’s response to Djokovic’s visa cancellation: "No one is above the law" forgetting already that there is an individual who is above the law: the immigration minister. A dictator who’s been playing with our lives.

1/4 Everyone now can see that the immigration minister even wields power above the courts and is able to deport Djokovic. It is the reality of Australia immigration system that an individual is controling everything without accountability. https://t.co/hPU0bwD6FI

Djokovic's mother says her son has been 'subjected to torture.' If Australia treats a global celebrity this way - just imagine what they have done to refugees in remote prisons in the islands for many years.

The difference between refugees and @DjokerNole goes beyond the length of their detentions. The asymmetry extends to the fact that Djokovic is able to defend himself in court and refugees are not; they are totally failed by the judicial system.

The normalization of indefinite detention is a reflection of a society’s values. We must interrogate & heal our colonial mentality in order to love people better. A powerful interview by @behrouzboochani for @abcnews - not easy to hear & digest unless your heart & mind is open

The AAT and Federal Court on two occasions have said a young man I assist should be owed protection. Yet he was flown to Christmas Island recently in the dark of the morning and not told where he was going or why. The Minister should not be able to override the courts #auspol https://t.co/DEiKE6RJ5c

If you are only just hearing this story, you may be shocked, @BehrouzBoochani and @JanetGalbraith5 write in an op-ed. "But the arbitrary and ongoing detention of people, including children, indefinitely is tolerated and normalized in Australia." https://t.co/eh5sUfVkdA

In Australia 1 person holds all the power so when John Howard said "we decide who comes here...." he really meant "the Min for Immigration decides & is over & above the law. Even judges will be wasting their time & we have deep pockets so don't bother fighting your case." https://t.co/xzVPX71yLm

4/4 For many, Australia is a democratic country but for refugees, it is a dictatorship system. Refugees are unprotected by the law and at the same time victims of the law.
