Thought provoking by @DKThomp. Love the alcohol metaphor as far as it goes, but it does not address what I see as the top 4 harms from internet platforms: damage to democracy, public health, human autonomy, and competition. https://t.co/RV85fGnkxb

If you want to understand the real life harms of surveillance — and the bias in the systems that leverage it — there is no voice like that of @hypervisible. A brilliant man, well profiled by @WillOremus. https://t.co/JUniWXtEzU

Once again, @profcarroll gets to heart of the matter. There is no easy fix to FB. Core choices: 1) end surveillance capitalism: e.g., no targeting w/ personal data, amplification for attention, recommendation engines for engagement. 2) Shut down FB (also Instagram, YT) https://t.co/o3MvLeJfFN

As usual, @jason_kint’s thread on @WSJ Facebook Files #5 is outstanding. I agree that architecture is the issue. Moderation alone cannot offset harms of architecture built for “attention at any cost.” 1/ https://t.co/pS61KpGziu

Episode 5 of @WSJ Facebook Files documents how FB’s internal architecture enabled vaccine opponents to undermine US pandemic response by flooding comments sections of legitimate info sources. 1/ https://t.co/wZhbIPSDk1

.@_KarenHao is doing extraordinary work covering the malfeasance of FB. Here is another mind blowing story about the impact of troll farms on FB during the 2020 elections. Spoiler: troll farms ran rampant on FB in 2020. Are you surprised? https://t.co/1jEUfVaWQe

FB’s statements after they get caught are always amazing … and have always worked. FB knows as much about human attention as any organization on earth. They know that if they buy enough time, policy makers and journalist will eventually get bored and move on. https://t.co/os1zBXHaPr

“Online privacy” is a meaningless term. Cookies are on the way out, but Google and FB have developed alternatives that will ensure that users continue to lose control over their own choices. https://t.co/lxVvhav1Fw

.@WillOremus describes FB’s penchant for studying its flaws, proving that its culture & business practices destroy fabric of society, and then burying studies. Employees have had enough and are leaking studies. Will policy makers and regulators do their job? Will public insist? https://t.co/q7oDGb5uKT

I think it is possible that all consumer-facing AI imperils human rights to one degree or another. It is all designed to manipulate behavior by exploiting/triggering the weakest elements of human psychology. https://t.co/nkw0rlOSO8

Big Tech companies behave like private governments, setting/enforcing their own rules in an authoritarian way. Damage to democracy, public health has been catastrophic. Key ?: do we care enough about democracy and public health to rein them in? Results to date are not promising. https://t.co/9OMSJRfKKu

This is such an important point. Big Tech argues that to compete with China we need to embrace China’s values and methods. That is self-serving BS. US should invest in its own values: diversity, democracy, entrepreneurship. Big Tech is authoritarian. https://t.co/YHddEqDuYL

For reporting purposes, I just download the FB app after ditching it yrs ago & eventually 'permanently' deleting my old account entirely. BUT when mistakenly using wrong login for the app, Facebook logged me into the old account I supposedly deleted. Still there, never deleted!

An investigation by @themarkup found that lenders in 2019 were more likely to deny home loans to people of color than to White people with similar financial characteristics. This is mostly due to the #CodedBias hidden in mortgage-approval algorithms. https://t.co/nTYYGlCy33

@cwarzel You make a good point but I'd also just like to point out that the flaws in how Facebook was implementing that 2018 algorithm change were evident to critics from the outset, who recognized it as a self-serving business move in the guise of reform. https://t.co/faxR2HHqOd
