@ScottHechWow. This is something. After NY Gov. Kathy Hochul lied yesterday about a recent powerful report by John Jay that underscores the success of bail reform —it *reduces* likelihood of rearrest—the author of the study corrected Hochul’s lies. “No.”

@ScottHechMichael Bloomberg—whose policing policies were so racist, they were rejected as unconstitutional by a federal judge—is spending $5 million to help NY Governor Kathy Hochul’s propaganda campaign to unnecessarily cage 10,000 more Black & brown New Yorkers.

@ScottHechWe should all be concerned about a Governor regularly lying to the public. Worse: To undermine their health & safety, cost a fortune, & jail 10,000s more.
It's getting worse. She just claimed a definitive report on bail reform's success said the opposite.

@ScottHechAlarming. Mike Bloomberg is now advising NY Gov. Hochul on how to force the mass caging of Black & brown people against her party’s will. Why is this significant?
A federal judge found his policing policies as mayor of NYC unconstitutionally racist.

@ScottHechWhat NY Governor Kathy Hochul is doing to Black and brown communities is actual trauma and violence. Forcing them to bus out to Albany to fight to protect bail reform from her unquenchable thirst for more incarcerated New Yorkers, again, and again, and again. She's a monster.

@ScottHechMy first legal work was researching juvenile life w/o parole sentences nationwide for Bryan w/n first week of law school. He became a mentor. Who encouraged me to be a public defender. Advised my first scholarly article. I saw him argue in the Supreme Court. A special human.

@ScottHechThink about all the horrors of police abuse, misconduct, racism, & violence you’ve seen that by mere chance happened to be caught on camera. Now imagine 100,000s (millions even?) more unseen incidents every year.
The weight of the U.S. policing problem is hard to fathom.

@ScottHechHypocrisy so violently strong right now.

@ScottHechNot surprising but still extraordinary how the same people most committed to “accountability” for poor people struggling w/ substance use, mental health issues, lack of housing, & poverty are those most committed to absolutely zero accountability & punishment for most powerful.
Scott Hechinger
@ScottHechI assume all these GOP folks screaming about how paying someone off for silence during an election is too small to prosecute will agree prosecuting people for drug use, petty theft, jumping the turnstile, being unhoused, & a host of other quality of life crimes is a costly waste.

@ScottHech“Violent crime skyrocketing!” Nope. Murder, shootings, rape, robbery, burglary, grand larceny, & transit arrests in NYC down between 2% & 19% compared w last year. And look at decrease since 2010. You’re an avid liar,
@EliseStefanik.

@ScottHechI don't get excited about people getting arrested.

@ScottHechThe only good thing about my wife spraining her foot yesterday is my 7 year old son calling her crutches — “crunches.” I will not correct him. Ever.
Scott Hechinger
@ScottHechMy goodness. If the GOP only cared as much about truth & justice as they pretend to when one of their own is at risk of being held accountability, mass incarceration would be long over and done with.
Scott Hechinger
@ScottHechWe should all call for the same level of care & due process now being afforded to Donald Trump to be afforded to the vast millions of others—disproportionately Black, brown, &/or poor—arrested, prosecuted, & surveilled in the United States.

@ScottHechThis is the same person SCREAMING about bail reform & LYING how people don't show up to court (when they do, overwhelmingly) & introducing a bill to REPEAL NY law to jail 10,000s Black people *now encouraging Trump to purposefully flee prosecution.*

@ScottHechNYPD is $100 million over budget for overtime as of February this year with 4 months still left in fiscal year. This is typical for police departments, who aren’t held to the same budgetary accountability as anyone else. This is massive public theft.

@ScottHechIn light of potential Trump arrest, reupping my oped from 4 years ago. The cases that push Trump to criticize American justice only underscore our 2-tiered system. These exceptional cases actually illustrate how the system could do far better for the rest.

Jared Chausow @jchausowTW: state violence.
Six Suffolk County jail officers beat an incarcerated person so bad his intestine ripped, then left him strapped to a gurney choking on his own blood.
Gov. Hochul wants *more* people detained in this jail without a trial.

Olayemi Olurin @msolurinShe’s not only lying, she knows she’s lying, because this is a woman who just months ago, wrote an op-ed for the NY Daily News explicitly saying that bail reform has been successful and the attacks on it are NOT supported by data. I’m putting out an episode next Wednesday…

@MattGoldbergI won’t pretend to know anything about NYC politics, but it seems like every new mayor is worse than the one who came before.

Latrice Walker @TheRealLatriceWWe are strong. I spoke today in defense of bail reform. “We don’t need more people locked up behind bars. We need more resources. We need investments in violence prevention, substance use treatment, housing, pretrial intervention and alternatives to incarceration.” Photo:

Sharlyn Grace @SharlynDGraceThis is absolutely craven from prosecutors. Hopefully after the Illinois Supreme Court decides the Pretrial Fairness Act is constitutional, this bad-faith separation of powers argument will die for good.
