This is what UMass students are going through. Blatant racism is occurring in MA on the campus of our "flagship" state college. I stand in solidarity with the Black students, professors and staff. I call on the administration and @MartyMeehan to take decisive action. #mapoli https://t.co/BUrpr61y2Y

This was such a great way to close out my night! Thank you to the Lord Mayor of West Roxbury, Ritchie Gormley, for inviting me and @titojackson for the humbling introduction! Like the Irish say, 26+6=1 that’s what we should aspire to in #D6, a unified people. #bospoli https://t.co/vS6rP8TljC

And the US was slow to require these vaccinations for reasons that I will explain in my book. But other countries established compulsory vaccination much earlier: Denmark in 1810, Norway 1811, Russia 1812, Sewden 1816, etc.

Boston kept unusually good records, so I suspect that other places may have had earlier mandates. Some whole towns required all their citizens to be vaccinated prior to this. Still, it's the first known record of compulsory school vaccination in the US. 5 https://t.co/Bq0i4YTdBs

This was a difficult record to find. Most articles cite other secondary sources. For example, this article cites medical historian John Duffy, Duffy cites a 1954 dissertation, which gave the page number of the records of the school committee. And those records are now online! 4/

It was done without much controversy (those arose after Massachusetts passed a compulsory vaccination law for children in the 1855). The only issue was that doctors wanted reimbursed for free vaccinations, so in Feb. the city gave the schools certificates to give doctors. 3/

Boston had a strong quarantine system and had conducted a general vaccination of the city 10 years before, but to keep smallpox out (it had been spreading in New York and Philadelphia), they ordered children to be vaccinated. 2/

You have to wonder how much harm has been done to individual students and to public health overall without comprehensive, evidence-based #SexEd in Massachusetts schools. A version of this bill has been in the State House for over a decade. #mapoli https://t.co/tMDhvlazaQ
